Obituary of Anne Pegram Brodie

BRODIE - Anne Pegram Allen passed away peacefully at age 90, in St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada on Monday, January, 8th 2024.

The only daughter of Robert Foote Allen and Lucy Trotter Bridgforth Allen, Anne was born in Norfolk, Virginia, on October 1, 1933.  She moved at about age 6 to Sparta, Ontario, Canada with her parents and older brother Robert Foote Allen (Jr.). Anne loved animals especially her horse Pepper.  She was a classic tomboy who loved climbing trees and riding all over the countryside near the family farm.  As a young girl she started her lifelong love of reading and learning.

Anne met James Dawson Brodie in high school, and they married on December 27th 1954.  Following Jim’s graduation from Queen’s University, they moved back to St. Thomas.  In 1958 she joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  She spent many years generously serving, especially those in need.  Anne became an accomplished researcher and genealogist.  She gathered the records of her ancestors and carefully recorded the information for her descendants.

Her 6 children were blessed by her talents and creativity as she became a skilled seamstress and cook.  Her home was a place where friends and family were always welcomed and well fed.  She loved to find an antique furniture bargain and refinish it to give it new life.  Anne loved her garden and her flowers and the beauty of nature.

Her 21 grandchildren remember being spoiled at Grandma’s.  She always prepared their favorite foods and would be sure to have them ready for their visits.  On the top of the fridge there was a big bowl of treats waiting – until after supper.  She enjoyed giving gifts and would often send them home with a toy in their pocket or backpack.

Anne is survived by her husband of 69 years, James Dawson Brodie, and 4 of her 6 children: Debbie Balzotti (Mark), Dave Brodie (Lisa), Steve Brodie (Janet), and Sue Dredge (John).  She is predeceased in death by her daughter Jane Swift (Leonard) and her son Bruce Brodie.  She and Jim have 32 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Shawn Jackson Funeral Home, 31 Elgin Street, St Thomas (519-631-0570).  Cremation has taken place.  A memorial service will be held at a later date. If desired, donations to Diabetes Canada would be appreciated.  Personal online condolences can be made at www.sjfh.ca
