Just sadly heard of Syd’s passing today. He was such a big part of our annual Monteith reunion picnics and I counted him as a friend. Syd used to stay with us when he attended the Celtic festival and college in Goderich. He was a burst of joy, energy, and kindness. He would help anyone, anytime. Our fondest memory of him is Syd in the Celtic kitchen during the college helping Norita and Mary feed hundreds of hunger people. Syd would dye his hair and beard red so that he could be one of the Red Heads. He is part of the fabric of the college and festival.

Syd was a truly sweet and big-hearted guy who willingly would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. He had a heart of gold. He was unassuming and passionate, and often misunderstood. He was a dedicated volunteer at the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival for many years, and for even longer one of the stalwart volunteers for the Cuckoo's Nest Folk Club. We will miss him.

Syd was a quiet man, strong and selfless, and generous with his time in all the volunteering he did. I have always assumed that I'd see him working away as usual, year after year when I came over to Canada. I’m really sad to hear this, and know what a shock it must be for all of you who worked with him. He did so much and will leave a great hole in many people’s lives.

I first met Syd in 1984 in Toronto when we worked at West Park Hospital. The patients and staff loved him. He had his dog Whiskey with him .Rest in peace old friend.

I had the pleasure of meeting Syd while volunteering at Home County Folk Festival many years ago. I always enjoyed catching up with him each year, and also at Cuckoo’s Nest Folk Club regularly. Condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

Sydney was a large part of my childhood going to John Wises woods looking for frogs and tadpoles, to riding horses in the back acreage. Syd his brothers Tim his sister Ina and his parents lived the old rule takes a village. There were hundreds of foster children who went through that house and Syd remembered all of them by name. When we touched base a few years ago he named them and asked me if I remembered. You will be missed. Suzannne Walton
