Obituary of Dorothy Jean Kosolowski

KOSOLOWSKI – Dorothy Jean (nee Halstead) of St Thomas and formerly of Thunder Bay passed away peacefully at Caressant Care Mary Bucke on Saturday, March 5, 2022 at the age of 94. Beloved wife of the late William Kosolowski. Dorothy is survived by her children Douglas (late Cynthia) Kosolowski and Karen Dahl (Vaughn); grandchildren Devin Kosolowski (Shania), Keith Arvelin (Tracey), Daniel Arvelin and Melanie King (Daniel); great grandchildren Thea, Meah, Sylvia, Brandon, Julia, Madelen, Emma, Helen, Grace, Hannah, Liam, Elaina, Connor and Zach; and a great-great granddaughter Aria. Also survived by her five sisters-in-law, Rose Kulp, Evelyn Dromisky, Jacki Jennings, Darlene Kosolowski and Marilyn Kosolowski. Dorothy was born in Winnipeg Manitoba. She grew up in the northern mining towns of Bisset, Manitoba and Geraldton, Ontario before moving to Port Arthur where she completed the commercial program at Hillcrest High School. She began her work life as a secretary with the Department of Mines, followed by positions with Canada Manpower, the student placement office at Lakehead University, and retiring from the Regional Children's Centre. While growing up in the north, Dorothy was mentored by her father in the outdoors skills of marksmanship, angling, and hunting which she enthusiastically mastered. When she and Bill married and started their family, they enjoyed family fishing and hunting trips in the Black Sturgeon area. Cooking Bannock over the fire, prepared with fresh caught pickerel were happy times with her friends and family. She was known as "Fire Dancer" as she expressed her fun-loving spirit dancing around the campfire at Sturge lake. Whether at the camper or at home, Dorothy loved to cook and set a lovely table. Dorothy and Bill raised Doug and Karen in the Current River community. She was active and competitive in bowling, curling, shuffleboard and cards. She expressed her love for her home and family through her creative skills of embroidery, knitting, and sewing. We all fondly remember the coat sweaters with the moose on them that she made for everyone. Granny D loved her grandchildren dearly; their visits and calls. Dorothy raised Devin from the time he was 7 years old, following his mom's passing and they developed a close bond. In later life, Dorothy could be found out for dinner with church members and her special friend Joseph Mosindy. Following an illness, she moved close to her family in St. Thomas, where she resided at Caressant Care Mary Bucke Place. She loved the activities and the many staff who provided exceptional care to her. Dorothy’s fierce sense of humor and straight forward attitude will be missed by all who knew her. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 436 Elm St, St Thomas on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. Private interment and dedication service of ashes to be held at a later date in Thunder Bay at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
