On behalf of Michael's roommates from Lester street I want to express our deepest condolences to his family and friends. As everyone summed up beautiful during the ceremony Michael was a joy to be around and unsurprisingly he was just as fun of a roommate. With two Michaels in the house he quickly became known as Singer as a result there were many Singer signatures: from his carefree dance moves to his weekday lunchtime stout to sanding down a cane we never quite figured out what he wanted to do with. He was as disarming and up for anything as they come. We grieve the loss of the amazing father, husband, friend he would have been for many years to come. Though gone too soon I am comforted by the fact he infused more joy into this world in his 29 years than many of us will in a lifetime. We send our love to everyone mourning this tragic loss.

Singer I miss you
You’re a hard guy to pin down with words, because I’ve never met anyone else like you. But I’ll give it a go:
Disarming, a safe guy to be around, killer sense of humour, loyal friend, all there, one in a billion, gentle and a gentleman
But no description does the memories justice. Of listening to you jam in your room with electric guitar and your pedal board. Of a big Mike Singer hug. Of the phoenix special move or a round of sizzle pong. Of seeing a genuine repentance in your eyes and a pure love for your Father. We met in first year at a CCF event at King St rez and struck off on our own the next year at Lester street. Our rooms were kitty corner in the basement and we shared a washroom and a small hallway. Most often you could be found sprawled on the faux leather couch in the living room. But when Id poke my head around the corner to your bedroom, you were always good for a chat, lounging on your half made bed with your laptop desk, hair disheveled, unmistakeable grin. There was a joy that burned in you like a furnace and allowed you to grin back at any situation, no matter how tough. Life seemed to hit you and bounce off like light from a fun house mirror. Your sense of humour was dry, self-deprecating, always unpredictable, and forever had us in stitches. You were the king of the quip and played your cards masterfully. Your signature dance move is etched in my memory, slender arms lifted up, fingers snapping, wiry figure swaying, head down, eyes closed. It was wonderfully freeing to be around you, because you cared so much about others, and cared so little about impressing anyone - we knew we could be ourselves with Singer. You had a hospitable spirit that made the person you were with know they mattered. You could strike up a conversation with anyone, but you always made time for your friends and were game for anything. Including games of risk, football, and late night adventures. You’d regularly pray for me as life played out and I remember the time you drove all the way out to Toronto to help Steph and I move into the big city. Cheerfully carrying furniture down the long hall from the truck. It was so fun to see you hang out with my one year old Elenour when we last spent an afternoon together. You were a kid at heart and sat down on the library floor to read her a story. You were suave without being serious about it. I have memories of you puffing a cigar, sipping whisky at DVLB and your unmistakeable style (you will forever be wearing the green H&M cardigan/hoody with wood buttons and white trim). You pushed through the physical limitations you experienced, fatigue and discomfort, valiantly. You didn’t complain, but met this challenge too with your ineffable grin and continued to pursue the simple things that matter in life: work, friendships, a special lady. What a heart wrenching loss to bid farewell your indomitable spirit, to bask no more in your light-hearted presence, to feel the absence of your love and friendship. When I first met Mike Singer, it was at a party. I had just started dating Jonathan and was meeting some of his best friends for the first time. I had heard Mike’s name thrown around a lot, often attached to a memorable moment or funny tale or to Joe. It was also often in full form-like just ‘Mike’ couldn’t contain enough personality- it was ‘Mike Singer’ - or ‘Singer’ for short. I remember when I met him- he was unlike anyone I had ever encountered. He had such a disarming presence that made you feel welcome and drew you in. He was the real deal, 100% authentic, no pretence and yet full of joy. Within an hour of meeting him we already had a couple of big laughs and inside jokes. I saw him hitting the dance floor and dancing with the boys in a way only Mike Singer can. He was the life of the party.

He really was the easiest person to be a around, he had a gift, making you feel like you belonged - like you had his full attention. And I know he wasn’t just that way to me - I’ve watched him do it to friends and strangers like baristas and even the rest of our wedding party. I reminder how his goofy antics helped break the ice during our wedding rehearsal and helped a group of strangers feel more at ease and connected. I’m so thankful for that, and for how he played at the library with our daughter like he wasn’t in public - like he wasn’t at all tethered by his adulthood, as often I can be, but he jumped right in. I know she loved it - she recalled their adventure with Dada and Uncle Mike.

Mike Singer was someone who was intentional. He came down to surprise Jonathan on a ‘special date’ and spent the evening in Hamilton with us. And during a crazy season shortly after we were married, he came and helped us with our first crazy move to Toronto. He was someone who showed up. I’m so thankful for how he did.

Mike Singer was not someone who didn’t face hardships, we have indeed walked through challenging seasons in his life in many areas. But despite the struggles Mike clung to hope. I’ve heard him offer compassion even to those who wronged him. He trusted God to provide in seasons of waiting. He suffered in a way that pointed to where his hope lied.

Saying Mike Singer will be deeply missed is definitely an understatement. I know he is irreplaceable and such a special person to lose. But I cling to the same hope that he did. That Mike is no longer here weighed down by disease or death but is in now arriving to an eternal party.
I’d like to imagine he is already making people feel more welcome up there. He’s getting some big laughs, making inside jokes. Continuing to be the life of the party.
I’d like to imagine he has already broken out some of his dance moves, maybe dancing with his maker in true Mike Singer fashion.
